～鑑賞者の想像力を増幅させる展示空間～

DAI ITOさん 写真展 “Shimmer”が、10月25日（日）までピクトリコ ショップ＆ギャラリー表参道で開催されています。映像や音楽の制作経験を持つ、写真家のITOさん。東京を拠点に、アメリカ、メキシコ、フランスなど、国内外問わず精力的に作品を発表されています。

本展では、映画『エンゼル・ハート』から着想を得た作品 “Angel Heart” と、メキシコ・テカテのアーティストとのコラボレーション作品 “Shot Glass”の Tokyo Side 、それら２つの作品が展示されています。それぞれ、2020年２月からメキシコのティファナで個展、テカテで2人展を開催されました。

――映像や音楽など、多様なメディア制作の経験をお持ちだと伺いました。その中で、写真をはじめられたきっかけは何だったのでしょうか？

大学卒業後、アニメーション映画制作チーム“6nin”を立ち上げ、国内外国際映画祭をはじめとし、テレビ番組や日本科学未来館のアートフィルムの制作などを手掛けました。ですが、方向性の違いによりチームでの活動は停止。そこで、今後は何に取り組もうかと模索していたとき、絵コンテを考えることが得意だったことをふと思い出したのです。そして、写真は絵コンテ同様に静止画ですし、映像制作で培った構図を見極める力も活かせるのではないかと思い、写真作品の制作に取り組みはじめました。

また、写真は一人で制作に取り組めるところも魅力的です。複数人で制作を行うと、意思疎通がまず困難！過去には自身の制作意図が的確に伝わらず、歯痒い思いをしたことが多々ありました。

――写真作品の制作において、映像や音楽の制作経験は活かされていますか？

“Angel Heart”には、映像や音楽的なアプローチを施しています。本作は、1987年公開のアラン・パーカー監督作品『エンゼル・ハート』（※1）から着想を得た作品で、映画を基にオリジナルのストーリーを構想し、それを写真と文章で表現しました。写真の連なりやオリジナルのストーリーは鑑賞者の想像力を刺激し、新たに構築された『エンゼル・ハート』の世界観を提示します。また、映画を観ているときにカメラのフレーム外で起きているであろう出来事を想像するのと同様に、写真と写真の間に潜むストーリーの行間まで思いを巡らせてもらいたいという狙いもあります。

――作品のサイズや配置も独特で目を引きますね！部分的に立体感もありますが、それらの意図を教えてください。

これらの展示構成には、音楽的なアプローチが関係しています。作品のサイズはそれぞれ 230 ×139 mm、306 × 184mm 、382 ×230 mm 、440 × 265 mmで、ヨーロピアン・ビスタサイズの作品で構成しており、それらは八分、四分、二分、全音符と対応しています。配置は、『エンゼル・ハート』のテーマソングである“Girl of My Dreams”のメロディーラインに、独自に編曲したベースラインを付加した楽譜そのものであり、そこにはインスタレーション的な側面もあります。立体的に飛び出している作品では、メロディーの強弱を表現しています。

――映像や音楽と写真は、親和性が高いのですね！

そうですね、意外と似ている要素があるからだと思います。例えば、映画『ウエスト・サイド物語』の音楽を手掛けた作曲家レナード・バーンスタインは、「音楽はタイムマシンだ」という言葉を残しています。作曲を行う際、喜びや悲しみなど、感情の爆発を一つの曲として仕上げることがよくあるのですが、実際に感情を実感するのはおよそ5秒程度。それをいかに曲として成立させるのか、つまり一瞬を引き伸ばすことが音楽だということを示唆した名言です。そして、この感覚は写真にも共通するのではないかと僕は思うのです。写真は音楽とは反対に、長い時の流れを一瞬の光景として１枚の画に収めます。ベクトルは違えども、根本的な部分は似通っていると思います。

――本展のもう一つの作品“Shot Glass”についても教えてください。

メキシコで暮らす女性フォトグラファー、サラヒ・カバレロとのコラボレーション作品です。彼女の地元・テカテでも展示を行いました。本作では「ショットグラス」を題材に、東京とテカテのストーリーを写真でお互いに表現しました。僕が12点、サラヒは14点の作品を制作しました。東京とテカテには物理的な距離があるため、お互いの共通点を見つけることは難しく、テーマ設定には苦戦しました。

――“Shot Glass”というテーマには、どのような意図があるのでしょうか？

メキシコといえば、やはりテキーラが有名です。また、お酒の場には出会いや喧嘩などドラマがつきもの(笑) テーマには最適だと思いました。そして、テキーラをショットグラスで楽しむように、日本にはお猪口があります。なので「ショットグラス（お猪口）」をテーマにしました。

また、テカテでの展示では、様々な実験的な取り組みを行いました。というのも、展示会場のディレクターであり、自身もアーティストとして活動されている、イルマ・ソフィア・ポーターが様々なアドバイスをしてくれたんです！例えば、最初は写真を展示するだけの予定でしたが、音楽も制作してみてはどうかという助言をもらいました。そこで、東京の街とテカテの自然の中で録音した音をミックスし、そこにサラヒのギタリストの旦那さんが演奏するギターの音と、僕のベースの音を加えた音源を制作し、会期中はBGMとして流しました。音楽を展示に絡められたのは、面白かった！

――本作は“Angel Heart”とは雰囲気が大きく異なり、作品１点１点のサイズが大きく、また存在感がありますね。

本作ではインパクトを重視しました。また、デジタルならではの良さを打ち出したいという狙いもあり、Photoshopの編集で雲やドットを加え、よりミステリアスな雰囲気を演出しました。

――本展のタイトル“Shimmer”には「きらめき」といった意味がありますが、どういった思いが込められているのでしょうか？

音楽用語の「shimmer revrb（シマーリバーブ）」がタイトルの由来です。リバーブとは、エコーのような残響音を加えるエフェクターのこと。またシマ―リバーブは、煌びやかな残響音が特徴のリバーブです。その美しい音色から、濃密だけど星空のようなリバーブと例えられることもあります。そして、その言葉と僕のメキシコの日々とが重なるように感じられたので、このタイトルを付けました。また、本作はプリントにもこだわっており、ライトが当たると角度によっては金色に光輝くのです。ぜひ会場で実際に見てみてください！

本展には、実に様々な仕掛けが施されており、その緻密な計算に基づく展示構成は鑑賞者の作品世界への没入感を高めてくれます。「僕は写真を専門的に学んではいませんが、だからこそ柔軟な発想で実験的な取り組みに挑戦できるという強みもあると思うのです」と、ITOさんは語ります。ぜひ会場で、作品表現の新たな可能性を感じてみてはいかがでしょうか。

Dai Ito's photo exhibition "Shimmer" is held in Pictorico Shop & Gallery Omotesando until Sunday, 25th October. Ito has experience making motion pictures and music. He is based in Tokyo and has exhibited his works in Japan and in the US, Mexico, France and other countries.

In this exhibition, he exhibits two works, "Angel Heart" which was inspired by the movie of the same title, and the Tokyo side of "Shot Glass" which collaborates with artists in Tecate, Mexico. These works were also exhibited in his solo exhibition in Tijuana, and the two photographers' exhibition in Tecate, Mexico.

--- I've heard you have experience creating various media such as motion pictures and music. What was the motivation to start photography?

After graduating from university, I started the "6nin" animation film team. In 6nin, we took part in many international film festivals, and also made some art animation movies for TV programs and the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation. But we paused our activities due to the different directions the members wanted to pursue. So, I had to think about what I could do after that. Then I remembered I was good at thinking about a storyboard. For me, the photograph is the same as the storyboard, and it would be great if I could use my strong point in the photographs. And I started to take some pictures.

The photograph also seemed attractive in that I could do it by myself, because it was sometimes hard to communicate with other members of the animation team.

---- In working on a photograph, do you think could you make use of your experiences with motion pictures and music?

With "Angel Heart", I tried to include visual and musical approaches. This work was inspired by Alan Parker's film "Angel Heart" in 1987. I made my original story based on the movie, and then I expressed it in photographs and writing. The series of photographs and the original story I wrote would stimulate the audiences' imagination and present a re-constructed new world of "Angel Heart".

--- The installation and sizes are also so unique, and partially it has a three-dimensional effect. Please tell me your aim for these.

This installation has a musical approach. Each photographs' sizes are 230 ×139 mm、306 × 184mm 、382 ×230 mm 、440 × 265 mm, with an aspect ratio of so-called European Vista, and these sizes correspond to the 8th, 4th, 2nd, and whole note in the music score. And the positions are also part of the art installation because all the photographs are set as an imitation of "Girl of My Dreams" which is the theme song for the movie "Angel Heart"; I arranged a simple bass line for the melody. Some photographs pop out; it means crescendo and diminuendo of the song.

--- So, motion pictures and music have a high affinity for photographs.

I think photography has a similar element with these other media. For instance, Leonard Bernstein said, "Music is a time machine" in his book. When composers work in music, they compose music with an emotional moment such as pleasure or sadness, but the real moment of these emotions is very short, like 5 seconds. He explained that writing music expands these short moments to one tune, which has a longer duration. And I think this feeling might be the same for photographs. On the contrary, the photograph can shorten a long time flow into one stopped picture. Of course, the direction is opposite, but I think its fundamental ideas are almost the same.

--- Please tell me about the other work in this exhibition, "Shot Glass".

This work is a collaboration project with Sarahi Caballero, who lives in Tecate, Mexico. We had a joint exhibition with this work there. We made each story in Tokyo and Tecate, based on the mutual theme "Shot Glass". I exhibited 12 photos, and Sarahi did 14 photographs. There is a long physical distance between Tokyo and Tecate, so it was hard to find our theme, something we have in common.

Tequila must be the most common thing when we heard Mexico in Japan. And in a place with drinks, we have many meetings and fights and other dramatic stories which turned out to be an excellent theme. And in Mexico, the people enjoy Tequila with a small glass. Also, we have a small glass for sake in Japan. So we had decided to set it as our theme.

Also, in the exhibition at Tecate, we tried many experimental challenges. The director of the gallery, a great artist, Irma Sophia Poeter, gave us various advice. Originally we were going to have a simple exhibition just showing our works, but she suggested that we also include sound because of my proposed relation to music. We recorded in a field in Tokyo and Tecate, then mixed it by Daniel Reveles, and I played the bass guitar with a guitarist René Arturo Crosthwaite who is Sarahi's husband. And we played the sound in the gallery during the exhibition. It was fun and so enjoyable.

--- This work is so different from "Angel Heart" in that each photograph is bigger and has a presence.

I placed value on impact in this work. I also wanted to try something new in the digital format, so I added some clouds and dots with Photoshop, to make them more mysterious.

--- About the title of this exhibition "Shimmer", what's your aim or your thought about this title?

It's based on the musical term "Shimmer Reverb". Reverb is an audio effect, which involves adding echo sounds to the original sound. Also, Shimmer Reverb has bright and dense sounds. Sometimes it's called celestial reverb due to its beautiful sounds. For me, the sound of Shimmer Reverb has a similar feeling to my lovely days in Mexico, so I set it as the title for my exhibition. Also, I used a special paper for prints. It has a unique reflection; depending on the angle that you see the print, you will also see the shiny golden reflection. Please come and see the golden reflection with your eyes.

There are various tricks to enjoy the photographs in this exhibition, and the well-calculated precise installation helps the audiences get into his world. Ito says, "I haven't studied photography academically though; this makes it possible for me to think flexibly about photography and try experimental new things". Why don't you come to the venue and feel a new possibility for photographic expression?
